Slow Cooker Kielbasa and Barbecue Beans is the perfect chilly day recipe! Made with three different beans, molasses, bacon, and kielbasa – it’s pure comfort food!

Slow Cooker Kielbasa and Barbecue Beans recipe

Slow Cooker Kielbasa and Barbecue Beans

Every Sunday, without fail, Chris asks me to make crockpot chili. He loves being able to watch football and grab a bowl of chili and eat it whenever he likes. My boys are big on chili too. They like me to warm up flour tortillas, spread the insides with melted butter and then roll them up. They dip that into their chili. Try it – it’s pretty spectacular!

As much as I love chili, I get a little tired of making it. So last week, our Sunday chili turned into this Slow Cooker Kielbasa with Barbecue Beans. It has all the components of chili that they love, but with a lot more flavor.

Slow Cooker Kielbasa and Barbecue Beans all mixed together in crockpot

I used three different beans, maple syrup, molasses, and a bunch of other ingredients that you likely have in your pantry for the base. In a moment of weakness, I opted to add in bacon, because, well…bacon.

bacon being added to slow cooker

My favorite part of this dish is the kielbasa. I love kielbasa and I like to keep it on hand for quick breakfast scrambles or easy dinners like this Kielbasa, Peppers, and Potato Hash or this Cheesy Kielbasa, Rice and Broccoli Skillet. I added two full ropes of kielbasa cut into chunks to the top of the rest of the ingredients and let me slow cooker do the work for me.

The kielbasa slowly cooks on top and the juices run down into the bean mixture below. Magical. When all is said and done, you’ve got something that looks like this:

And, a house that smells fantastic. Win-win. Watch how easy it is! (Many asked on Facebook where I got my slow cooker from…it’s a Disney Pixar Slow Cooker that you can find here.)

Ingredients

  • 2 15 oz black beans canned, drained and rinsed
  • 2 15.8 oz Great Northern beans canned, drained and rinsed
  • 1 15.25 oz can kidney beans canned, drained and rinsed
  • 1 onion diced
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp mustard
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 14.5 oz chicken broth
  • 1/2 lb bacon cooked, cut into bite size pieces
  • 2 lbs Kielbasa cut into bite size pieces

Instructions

  • In a large slow cooker, add all of the ingredients except for the kielbasa and stir gently to combine.
  • Place the kielbasa on top and cover with the lid.
  • Cook on low for 6 to 8 hours or high for 4 to 5 hours. Stir in the kielbasa before serving.

Notes

I recommend the low setting for this recipe because on high, the beans tend to get dried out. If you need to cook on high due to time constraints, monitor the beans and add more broth or water if necessary.

Looking forward to making this tomorrow. I watched the video for the answer to the question I had. Just a suggestion for your recipe – the tablespoon of mustard should be listed as “prepared mustard”. I almost grabbed my dry mustard and stopped when I realized a tablespoon seemed like a lot. ? Thanks for sharing this recipe!

    Trish,
I have made this recipe several times now and I/we love it. I use a large crockpot, and I make enough to last at least two dinners.

Instead of Kielbasa, I use a spicy smoked sausage (Ripple is the brand I think). I cut up about 3 lbs of the sausage and I use a 22 oz package of thick cut applewood smoked bacon.

    Pure “hog” heaven.

Any chance you’ve tried this in an Instapot? What modification would you make for the cooking time & release method there?

What are the nutritional values on this dish? Being diebetic I need to know the amount of sugar is in the dish, which looks amazing.

Hi, I use My Fitness Pal to count calories and tack my exercise. You can also create recipes. We used 1# 6 oz. kielbasa from a local meat market. When I created the recipe on MFP, I looked for kielbasa from a meat market. Here’s the breakdown based on 10 cups total, 1 Cup/serving. Calories: 512, Fat: 18.2g, Saturated fat: 6.2g, Trans fats: 0g, Cholesterol: 54.0g, Sodium: 1471.8mg, Potassium: 524.5mg, Carbs: 63.5g, Fiber: 12.8g, Sugars: 23.3g, Protein: 26.0g, Vit. A: 3.2%, Vit. I hope this helps, Sef. Remember, this is based on the available ingredients where I live. (per written recipe).

Do you have any suggestions for ketchup replacement. I’m allergic to tomatoes, peppers, potatoes & eggplant.

This might not be the right recipe for you then because the BBQ sauce usually has a tomato component as well. Best of luck!

i dont see why this would take six hours as long as the bacon and kielbasa were cooked prior i would think it would be more just a matter of warming it up and mixing it together and could be just as easily done in a stock pot

Agree. Not sure either why it would take 6 hours on low. I make this in a large stock pot and simmer till heated thru. If I am taking to a party, then move it to a crock pot

You could use knockwurst, or even bratwurst, as a substitute.

Leila bass is a preformed sausage. All you have to do it heat it and it’s ready to eat. You technically could even eat it without heating.

How do I do this recipe using dry beans? I’ve seen the 16 bean bags in the store. Prefer using dry beans. Recipe sounds great.

What amount of dried beans will make the same amount as the canned beans in the recipe. We don’t use much salt in our home and using the.dried beans would sure cut down on the Sofia and let the other flavors shine thru. Also, do you soak.the.beans.overnight first or just.add extra.liquid to all the ingredients in the crock.pot?

So for a recipe that calls for one 15-ounce can of beans, you can cook 3/4 cup (4.5 ounces) of the dried version and be in the ballpark.
