Does anyone else remember the KFC Buffets??  I remember going to the KFC buffet during high school and it was like heaven.  My mom would take me there after a volleyball game or maybe a track meet and I would eat ridiculous amounts of food.  Now that I think about it, I wonder if I was the reason they stopped the buffet??

Food for thought…

I think this is about the time that my love affair with their coleslaw began.  It’s completely ruined me for all other coleslaw.  Oh, I’ve tried other coleslaw – of course!  But it just isn’t the same.  So sweet and a little bit tangy – coleslaw perfection!

KFC Copycat Coleslaw |

I’ve been known to eat the entire family meal coleslaw by myself.  Hands off people!  No shame here. None.  Now of course I can’t always make it over to KFC and making it at home is the next best thing.  It’s easy too!  Now I’m going to tell you the coleslaw secret: You have to let it chill for at least 2 hours.  The longer the better.  This stuff just gets better by the day.

This coleslaw is the perfect side dish for almost any sandwich and is amazing with pulled pork.  I made this coleslaw to accompany our Spicy Pulled Pork Popper Sandwiches and it was divine!

When you first combine the ingredients you’re going to start doubting me.  Don’t.  It’s going to look a lot “dryer” thank KFC coleslaw at first.  Let it chill and then you’ll see.  Trust me.

This coleslaw is the perfect side dish to every barbecue and it’s great to bring to pot lucks and other get-togethers.  I’ve never brought home leftovers.  Never.  You can easily double the recipe for a crowd {and you should!}.

Copycat KFC Coleslaw
Serves: 8 servings
  • ½ cup mayonnaise (I use light)
  • ¼ cup buttermilk
  • 1½ Tbls apple cider vinegar
  • 2 Tbls lemon juice (fresh is best)
  • ⅓ cup sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ⅛ tsp pepper
  • ½ tsp celery seed
  • 16 oz shredded bagged cole slaw mix
  1. Whisk together all the ingredients except for the shredded cole slaw mix.
  2. Add the bag and mix until nicely blended with the dressing.
  3. Refrigerate 2-3 hours (or longer).
  4. Mix well again just before serving.

This coleslaw would go great with these recipes:

Mojo Beef Kabobs and Grilled Tri-Tip with 3-Onion Sauce

Fish Tacos with Roasted Corn Salsa

  1. Love it Trish! Your photos are gorgeous!

  2. I’m kind of a coleslaw hoarder myself…can’t get enough of the stuff!! This looks perfect, Trish!

    • Glad to not be alone in this Becca :) Thanks so much for the sweet comment!

    • We owned a KFC for many years….there is NO mayonnaise in it, rather Miracle whip!!! It also does not include any buttermilk! Sorry!

I’m a big time KFC coleslaw fan. I love the sweetness of it! Don’t get me wrong, I’ll eat coleslaw from other places, but KFC’s is by far my favorite. And like other’s have mentioned, I’ve also been guilty of going to KFC strictly for their sides, not their chicken. Lisa, I can believe Miracle Whip is the product used for the sweet flavor rather than mayo. I’ve preferred Miracle Whip on my sandwiches and in my potato salads since childhood. No mayo for, but I’m most definitely trying this recipe. Trish, I chose your recipe over the other “copycat” recipes because of the look of your coleslaw (beautiful photos and looks like what I am used to getting at KFC) and there aren’t large chunks of foods that I know aren’t in KFC’s slaw, onions, green onions, celery, grapes, etc. While I like to eat these things, I’m simply looking for what I get at the restaurant. Thank you so much for sharing your talents with us! Can’t wait to give this a try.

I have been going to KFC just for their sides too. Coleslaw & potato wedges both in large size. I just have to remember to ask first for my senior discount. This coleslaw is something I will have to try. However my favorite coleslaw of all time was at the old ( now telling my age) L & K restaurants which closed down many, many years ago. Have searched internet for information on the recipe but have never found out how they made such a creamy sauce. Used to go out late at night just for their bowl of coleslaw and some French fries. Believe me it was the best coleslaw ever made.

      • Thanks for the info.

  3. When I was in High School (Gosh, a LOOOONG time ago!), I would go to KFC and always order biscuits and coleslaw. I loved eating both of those things together…who needs the chicken! lol

  4. I like to consider myself a coleslaw connoisseur, I tend to always get a side of coleslaw if a restaurant offers it and see what I think. I do, actually, really enjoy KFCs coleslaw, I will have to give this recipe a try. I absolutely LOVE the pulled pork popper, that just looks off the chart delicious!

  16. Hi Trish,
I love KFC coleslaw. The only KFC in town closed a couple of years ago. I use to pick up a family meal and head over to the nearest park for a picnic. Good memories.
Thanks so much for sharing. I look forward to giving it a try.
    Bye for now, Darlene

this really looks great….I did notice that you’re using Mayo..I’ve seen copy cat KFC coleslaw before…and they used KRAFT MIRACLE WHIP (that’s the only time I ever bought that) and it was fairly close. I’m dying to try you’rs since it uses regular Mayo (Hellman’s/Best Foods all the way) thank you for this version…

  23. I have to admit – I’m not the biggest coleslaw fan, but on the rare occasion we have kfc, I always have to have coleslaw!! I’m sure I’d like this even better!

  26. I feel the same way about KFC coleslaw! I have a similar copycat recipe as you’ve posted but mine calls for 1T. Minced onion and no celery seed and variable amounts of the same ingredients as yours. It is almost spot on the same as KFC coleslaw!

  27. what kind of mayonaisse?they all have different tastes..thanks

  28. denise smith says:

this is how i feel, because i too love love love this coleslaw….HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY …lol..thanks for recipe!!!

  29. I love love love KFC cole slaw and, like you, could make a meal out of it. I’m definitely going to try this one because it appears to be much healthier then the recipe I use now but supposedly, the one I use is an authentic KFC recipe but has waaaaay too much sugar in it in addition to Miracle Whip which has its own health issues

  30. There are still 2 KFC buffets here in southern California that i know of. I used to pig out on mac and cheese and their biscuits. :) Oh man, now i want some crispy strips, potato wedges and a biscuit!!! I’m going to give the recipe a try :)

  31. Hey there is still a KFC buffet in TN I went to it yesterday yum yum!

  32. I love this coleslaw recipe but I add 1/2 tsp garlic powder and a few stalks of green onions including the white parts. I also like to marinate the onions in the sugar and vinegar before adding the rest of the ingredients. I actually make a sandwich just using the coleslaw. Better the next day. Also have added red and green chopped peppers to make it even more colorful and nutritious.

  33. Debra Anderson says:

I love this recipe! I will take coleslaw over any other side dish if it’s available. And I especially love it on fish sandwiches, with a dab of tarter sauce. It’s delicious!!

  34. Amanda R says:

This is the best homemade coleslaw recipe I have ever tried. I’ve been searching for the perfect one for so long, and the search is now over! While I don’t think it tastes exactly like KFC’s, I do love this one, and I will make it again and again. The only change I made was to use a scant 1/8 tsp of celery seed as I just don’t care for the stuff (a little goes a long way for me). Thanks for an awesome recipe!

  35. We owned a KFC for many years….there is NO mayonnaise in it, rather Miracle Whip!!! It also does not include any buttermilk! Sorry!

  36. Found this on Pinterest and made it for a company potluck. Wow! It’s delicious and people loved it and it’s so easy to make. I’ll be making it again for an outdoor crawfish boil this weekend. It will be perfect. Thank you for sharing!

  39. Hi Trish,
I was wondering, for the copycat recipe for KFC Coleslaw, could i use Miracle Whip instead of Mayonnaise?

  43. I don’t usually comment on blog posts, but I made this recipe yesterday, and oh my, did it receive compliments galore!

I’ve had this recipe pinned on Pinterest for about 9 months now, and I decided to give it a whirl this 4th of July. I am a huge coleslaw snob, and this recipe has become my new favorite! It was so easy to make (especially never having made it before), and the outcome was absolutely delicious! When I brought it to my friend’s barbeque, I was sad that two other guests brought store-bought coleslaw from the deli. I subtly mentioned mine was a KFC copycat recipe and that I made it fresh today. It received so many compliments that I just had to compliment your recipe :)

  44. This looks like a good basic coleslaw recipe, but there are better copycat KFC coleslaws. The veg needs to be more finely chopped which adds to “sporkable” coleslaw. Adds something to the true copycat.
