Garlic Green Beans

Elevate your side dish game with these Brown Butter Garlic Green Beans! A heavenly combination of crisp green beans, savory garlic, nutty brown butter and crunchy almonds. This simple recipe is perfect for impressing guests or adding a touch of elegance to any meal.

This garlic green beans recipe is quick and simple to make. Fresh green beans get a quick roast in the oven until crisp-tender then are tossed in a rich brown butter and garlic mixture and topped with slivered almonds. It’s part Green Beans Almondine and part my Nana’s famous Green Bean Recipe. It’s honestly the perfect side dish for any meal but is ideal for holiday gatherings.

How To Brown Butter

These garlic green beans get incredible flavor from a simple process known as brown butter.

Browning butter is the process of cooking butter until it starts to separate. The milk solids (the specks in the melted butter) get a lovely golden brown color and the browned butter will smell deliciously nutty.

5 SECRETS TO GETTING DINNER ON THE TABLE...FAST!

It’s important to not step away from the butter because it can go from brown to burnt in a second. I’ve done it too many times to count. The delicious, nutty smell is gone and burnt, smelly butter remains. It’s unsalvageable so don’t walk away!

Once you see the butter start to slightly brown, remove from the heat immediately because it will continue to brown for a minute after it’s off the heat. This entire process should take about 5 minutes.

How To Make Garlic Green Beans

This simple side dish is packed with flavor and comes together in a snap – perfect for those busy weeknights or special holiday gatherings where you want to impress without the stress.

  1. Roast Green Beans. Spread green beans out on a large baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes at 375°F. (This step is to soften the green beans a bit. If you prefer crisper green beans, you can omit this step and prepare this recipe entirely on the stovetop.)
  2. Brown Butter. Place butter in a large skillet and melt on medium to medium low heat. Stir with a spatula frequently, watching very closely. Once you see the butter start to slightly brown, remove from the heat immediately.
  3. Seasonings. Add the green beans to the skillet along with the garlic, onion powder, seasoned salt and Italian seasoning. Toss with tongs to evenly coat the beans.
  4. Finish Cooking. Place the skillet back on the burner (on medium heat) and heat for 5 to 10 minutes, tossing frequently with tongs, until desired crispness is achieved. Add in slivered almonds and toss to combine. Transfer to a serving dish and enjoy!

Storage Information

Store leftover green beans in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Gently reheat in the skillet. I do not recommend freezing this recipe.

Trish’s Tips and Tricks

  • Watch the butter closely as it browns. It can turn from perfect brown butter to burnt in seconds.
  • Prefer softer green beans? Add a few minutes to the initial roasting of the green beans. Crisper? Skip the roasting step.

Can I Use Frozen Green Beans?

Yes, although the texture may be slightly less crisp than fresh. I recommend roasting for an extra 5 to 10 minutes to help any excess moisture to evaporate.

When Is The Butter Brown Done?

The butter will turn a toasty brown color, and you’ll notice a nutty fragrance. Remove it from the heat as soon as you see these signs to prevent burning.
