Homemade Simply Delicious Sausage Gravy is so easy to make using my Nana’s recipe!

Simply Delicious Sausage Gravy from MomOnTimeout.com | This is my Nana's recipe for sausage gravy - it's simple to prepare and delicious!

So I’m about to let you in on a little family secret…

…we love sausage gravy!

Ask Bryce any time of the day what he wants to eat and nine times out of ten he will answer with sausage gravy. He eats it by the spoonful – no biscuits required! The rest of us eat more civilly with yummy, buttery biscuits 🙂  It has long been a family favorite and it’s really a cinch to pull together. The recipe I use calls for only a handful of ingredients and can be easily customized to your family’s tastes and preferences. If you like your gravy a little runnier, use a little less flour and a little more milk. If you like it nice and thick try using a little less milk. Try adding in some red pepper flakes or cayenne to spice it up a little. Throw in some herbs to really add some depth of flavor – sage is delicious!

Ingredients:
1 pound breakfast sausage
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2 cups milk or half & half, heavy whipping cream, evaporated milk – pretty much any dairy product 😉
Black pepper to taste – I use lots of cracked black pepper
pinch of sugar {cause that’s what my Nana used!}

Directions:
Brown sausage. Season liberally with black pepper. Sprinkle flour over the cooked sausage and stir. Let flour cook for 1-2 minutes and then gradually add milk, stirring as you pour. Bring gravy to a simmer and let thicken. This is where my Nana adds a pinch of sugar and so do I. She told me that it helps the gravy brown and I guess that makes sense because the sugar is caramelizing. Who knew?

    I grew up in CA and was never introduced to sausage gravy until college (I went to school in Tulsa). And I love it! I feel like I had a deprived childhood now. 🙂

    Thanks for sharing at The Fun In Functional!

    Oh yummy! Do you think this could work with a milk substitute like almond or soy milk?

      It would definitely alter the flavor some but you could give it a try 🙂 Maybe cut the recipe in half the first time?

    Yummmm. I think this might have to be our breakfast on Saturday!! During the week we stick to cereal, a quick bagel, or other 5 minute breakfast options, but on the weekends I like to take time whipping up something yummy.
