We are obsessed with no bake desserts. There is just something so freeing about not having to turn on the oven. Take a look at some of these favorites:

Ingredients Needed

This dessert is made in three easy layers: the crust, filling, and toppings. You can find the full, printable recipe in the recipe card at the bottom of this post. Let’s take a look at what you’ll need:

For the crust:

  • graham cracker crumbs – You can use another type of cracker here if you prefer. Vanilla wafers are a good choice, but you can also switch things up and use different flavors of OREO cookies if you want to be really adventurous.
  • melted butter – if you wish to use unsalted butter, add ¼ teaspoon of salt.
  • light brown sugar – granulated sugar can be used instead.

For the filling:

  • sweetened condensed milk – you will need one can.
  • cream cheese – make sure the cream cheese has softened at room temperature for at least 15 minutes.
  • crushed pineapple – one of the elements of a classic banana split.
  • lemon juice – you can even use lime juice if you prefer.
  • bananas – you will need about 2 to 3 medium to large bananas.
  • whipped topping – you will need about one 8 ounce container. Or use homemade whipped cream instead. See notes in the recipe card below.

Toppings:

  • chocolate syrup – or caramel or butterscotch or hot fudge, whatever you like.
  • finely chopped pecans – or walnuts or peanuts.
  • maraschino cherries – you can also use your favorite fresh berries like blueberries or raspberries.

How To Make a No Bake Banana Split Dessert

  1. Prepare a 9×13 baking dish by lightly spraying it with cooking spray and then setting it aside.
  2. Stir together the graham cracker crumbs, melted salted butter and light brown sugar in a large bowl until combined.
  3. Press mixture into the bottom of the baking dish to create a crust. Refrigerate for 20 to 30 minutes while preparing the filling.
  4. Using a mixer, beat together the sweetened condensed milk and cream cheese for 1 to 2 minutes or until light and fluffy and no lumps remain.
  5. Beat in the crushed pineapples and lemon juice.
  6. Pour mixture over graham cracker crust and then top with a layer of sliced bananas.
  7. Spread whipped topping (or whipped cream) over banana layers. Chill until ready to serve.
  8. Drizzle chocolate syrup over the entire dish and then sprinkle chopped pecans. Top it off with maraschino cherries and serve immediately.

To substitute homemade whipped cream for the whipped topping:

  1. Chill a mixing bowl and whisk attachment in the freezer for 5 to 10 minutes.
  2. Pour 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream into mixing bowl and beat on medium-high speed until the cream gets bubbly and starts to thicken.
  3. Gradually add 1/3 cup powdered sugar and 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract. Continue beating on medium-high speed until stiff peaks form.
  4. Use in place of the whipped topping in the recipe.

It is ideal to chill dessert for 1-2 hours before serving, but not completely necessary. Feel free to serve immediately after assembly.

Banana Split Dessert Recipe FAQs

How should this dessert be stored?

Cover and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

Can this dessert be frozen?

Yes, you sure can. It’s also delicious to eat straight from the freeze that makes it even more like an ice cream banana split experience. Add the topping just before serving.

Can this banana split dessert recipe be made in advance?

This dessert is best enjoyed the day it’s made. If you using whipped topping it can be made a full day in advance. If using homemade whipped cream, it’s best to serve the day it’s made.

Does the banana split dessert need to be chilled?

Actually, no. I think the flavor and consistency is best after an hour or two but if you simply don’t have the time or can’t wait, go ahead and serve immediately after assembling.

Variations To Try

Just like you can add whatever toppings you want to a real banana split, you can add whatever you want to this dessert.

For example, I would add some raspberries or blueberries to this, or some Reese’s crumbles to the top. I’d also try caramel syrup or even butterscotch instead of chocolate on the top.

Some people enjoy toppings such as sprinkles, cookie crumbles, little candies, or popping boba pearls. Or, add some actual ice cream! Just make sure you enjoy every bite!

Started with my great grandmother on down through the family. My sister and I have now been making this dessert for our families for years. I cannot believe the recipe is now being published like it was just invented.

Lol! Debra, I didn’t invent this recipe, nor did your great grandmother. This is my take on a classic recipe that I think my readers will enjoy. Have a great day.
