My family loves teriyaki chicken! It’s one of our favorite meals to grab when we go out to our local Chinese restaurant. Do you know what’s even better than takeout teriyaki chicken? Being able to make it at home! My recipe is easy to make and full of the same restaurant flavor that we all love.

What Is Teriyaki Chicken?

Teriyaki Chicken is a popular chicken dish that is made with chicken pieces and covered with a sweet yet savory sauce.

Teriyaki chicken goes great with fried rice, white rice, and fresh vegetables, such as steamed broccoli and carrots. This version is made in the Air Fryer and comes out crispy and delicious.

Air Fryer Recipes

I have become obsessed with my air fryer! It produces amazing food that is so crispy you would think it was fried but it’s healthier, easier to make, faster and tastes so good!

Homemade Teriyaki Sauce

One of the best things about this recipe is the homemade teriyaki sauce. It can be used in a lot of other dishes too!

The teriyaki sauce is made with soy sauce, ginger and other Asian inspired flavors. The chicken gets tossed with this sticky, sweet sauce just before serving.

Teriyaki Chicken Ingredients

When following this Teriyaki Chicken Recipe, you will need to have the following ingredients to get started (you can find the full, printable recipe in the recipe card at the end of this post):

  • Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breast or Thighs. You will need a pound of chicken for the recipe. You can use chicken breasts or thighs, but make sure they are skinless and boneless.
  • Eggs. Beat your eggs and use them to cover the chicken before adding cornstarch and breadcrumbs. The eggs help bind everything together.
  • Cornstarch. Makes the chicken nice and crispy.
  • Panko Breadcrumbs. Grab any brand of panko breadcrumbs to use as a coating for your chicken. I love panko because it has a great crunch.

Teriyaki Sauce Ingredients

After preparing the chicken, you will need the following ingredients to prepare the sauce to put on top of it:

  • Soy Sauce. The soy sauce adds a slightly salty taste to the sauce. You can also use coconut aminos as well.
  • Brown Sugar. Use two tablespoons of brown sugar to bring a hint of sweetness to your teriyaki sauce.
  • Ginger. The ginger has a powerful taste that contributes to the amazing teriyaki flavor.
  • Garlic. Mince two garlic cloves before adding it to the sauce.
  • Rice Wine Vinegar. This is a special vinegar that is popular in Asian cooking. It can be found in the Asian food aisle with the other condiments.
  • Sesame Oil. Adds tremendous flavor to the teriyaki sauce. It’s one of my all time favorite ingredients. Toasted sesame oil works too.
  • Cornstarch. This is what thickens the sauce.
  • Sesame seeds. You can use all white, all black or a mixture of the two.

How to Make Teriyaki Chicken

Making Teriyaki Chicken is not as complicated as it sounds. After you gather your ingredients, follow these step-by-step instructions (you can find the full, printable recipe in the recipe card at the end of this post):

Make the Chicken

  1. Cut chicken into small cubes. Remove excess moisture from them by patting them down with a paper towel until chicken feels dry to the touch.
  2. Place the cornstarch and panko breadcrumbs in a bowl and mix them together. Set aside.
  3. Beat eggs together in a small bowl. Dip chicken into the eggs and then drop into panko mixture making sure to coat the chicken on all sides.
  4. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F. Spray the air fryer insert with a nonstick cooking spray and carefully place your chicken into the air fryer. Do not overcrowd the insert. You may need to do this in batches.
  5. Cook for 15 to 18 minutes, turning the chicken halfway through cooking. When the chicken is done, remove it from the air fryer and set the chicken on a metal rack for several minutes before you toss them in the teriyaki sauce (see below). This way the chicken will remain nice and crisp and not get soggy.

Note: The teriyaki sauce should be prepared while the chicken is cooking in the air fryer.

Make The Teriyaki Sauce

  1. Add all of the teriyaki sauce ingredients into a medium saucepan and whisk over medium heat until the mixture is brought to a boil.
  2. Next, reduce the heat to medium-low and let the sauce simmer until it has thickened, about 3 to 5 minutes.
  3. Then, remove from heat and allow the sauce to cool slightly, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  4. Finally, transfer the chicken to a large bowl and pour the sauce over the chicken, toss to combine.

Top your teriyaki chicken with sliced green onions and sesame seeds for a restaurant quality finish!

Wow! This was fantastic! The only drawback is cooking in batches but it’s worth it! My guys both said, “Wow!” After the first taste.

Thanks for sharing this great recipe
