Orange Poppy Seed Cookies

You may have had my lemon poppy seed cookies before, but these Orange Poppy Seed Cookies may just become your new favorite! Bursting with fresh citrus flavor and topped with a sweet orange glaze, these beautiful cookies are nearly impossible to resist.

I’ve made thousands of cookies in my life time and this particular recipe is a personal favorite of mine. I’ve always loved poppy seed muffins, poppy seed chicken, and most definitely poppy seed cookies.

The awesome thing about citrus is that it works year round. It’s light and refreshing in the summer months and bright and cheerful in the winter months.

5 SECRETS TO GETTING DINNER ON THE TABLE...FAST!

Tips and Tricks

There’s something about the poppy seeds that make these cookies so darn happy. I love to zest some orange peel over the top when I’m all done so that my guests really know what they’re getting. It also adds additional orange flavor to these cookies.

There are a couple of tricks that I use to make these cookies extra special. I use 2 egg yolks in addition to 1 whole egg to help get a richer color. If you like, add a drop of orange food coloring to really emphasize the color. Use this gel food color if you can.

The cookies are baked at a lower temperature for a longer time to keep them from turning too brown before they are finished baking.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • all purpose flour
  • salt
  • baking soda
  • orange zest
  • poppy seeds
  • unsalted butter
  • granulated sugar
  • eggs
  • orange extract
  • orange food color (optional)

And the optional orange glaze:

  • powdered sugar
  • orange juice
  • orange zest to sprinkle on top

Let’s Do This!

  1. Whisk together the flour, salt, baking soda, orange zest, and poppy seeds.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar together. Beat in egg and egg yolks until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in orange extract and food color. Stir in flour mixture just until combined.
  4. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or use a silicone baking mat.
  5. Scoop out cookie dough onto the baking sheet. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until VERY lightly browned on the edges and bottom.
  6. Let cookies cool for several minutes on the baking sheet before transferring to a wire rack to cool.
  7. Make the glaze: Whisk together the powdered sugar and orange juice and drizzle over cooled cookies.
  8. Let the glaze set up before serving.
