Two Green Smoothie Recipes You’ll Love!

Two delicious green smoothie recipes that even your kids will love!  Peanut Butter Banana Green Smoothie and Berry Green Smoothie recipes are the perfect way to start your day!

Peanut Butter Banana Green Smoothie | - The peanut butter and banana mask the taste of spinach so all you end up with a delicious, healthy breakfast! #green #smoothie #breakfast #recipe

I think we all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day right?  Your body hasn’t consumed anything for at least 8 hours and it needs nutrition first thing in the morning.  I like to keep things pretty easy for breakfast – especially during the week.  Saturday and Sundays you’ll find me in the kitchen making sausage gravy and biscuits, serving up breakfast burritos, or making one of my personal favorites – Overnight Caramel Pecan Cinnamon Rolls!  Monday through Friday however I’m looking for breakfast solutions that get everyone out the door and on their way with a full belly and a healthy start to their day.

Peanut Butter Banana Green Smoothie | - The peanut butter and banana mask the taste of spinach so all you end up with a delicious, healthy breakfast! #green #smoothie #breakfast #recipe

Breakfast is different each day of the week at our house and one of our favorite go-to breakfasts are smoothies.  Smoothies are great because my husband can take them to go in the car and Bryce and Reece will drink them while watching a show in the morning before school.  My kids will drink anything if I call it a smoothie – even those smoothies that just happen to be green.  Packing in 2 cups of spinach into breakfast is one of the smartest ways to start your day and my green smoothie recipes both call for Greek yogurt which packs a super-protein punch.

Pairing up these green smoothies with items that are easy to take on-the-go makes breakfast a no-brainer on my part.   Two of my favorite items are Nature Valley Granola Bars {my kids LOVE these!} and more recently belVita Breakfast Biscuits {my boys think these are cookies}.  We happened to be out of both so I headed over to Safeway to do some shopping while Chris took the boys over to Fairytale Town.  Reece had a Super Hero Class there today and he had so much fun!   I had all kinds of fun too as I picked up all kinds of breakfast items and took advantage of Safeway’s Buy 4 Save $4 and loaded up on our favorites!  Nothing I like more than #BreakfastSavings!

The first smoothie I want to share is my favorite green smoothie – the Peanut Banana Green Smoothie.  This recipe calls for only 1 Tablespoon of peanut butter and you won’t believe the delicious peanut butter taste that comes through!  I think this is the best smoothie recipe for masking the spinach taste…if that’s what you’re trying to do ;)  I particularly enjoy this smoothie with the belVita Breakfast Biscuits aka “breakfast cookies” in my house.  There is some serious nutrition packed into those four little biscuits and the boys think they’re getting a treat – a win-win for all of us!

The boys actually prefer the “Berry Green Smoothie” but they really do like both.   Packed full of antioxidants from the blueberries and strawberries, it is a sweeter alternative to the Peanut Butter Banana Green Smoothie.  I use juice in this recipe instead of milk, and if I’m feeling extra generous, about a teaspoon of honey gets thrown in making sure the boys down their smoothies with a smile on their face.  The boys enjoy Nature Valley Granola Bars with the Berry Green Smoothie in the morning and I get almost giddy thinking about all the good-for-you stuff that they just ate :)

Which of these recipes do you think your kids would most enjoy?  What about you?

Berry Green Smoothie
  • ⅔ cup orange juice or orange juice blend
  • ½ cup Greek yogurt
  • 4 frozen strawberries
  • ⅓ cup frozen blueberries
  • 1 tsp honey {optional}
  • 2 cups fresh spinach.
  1. Blend all ingredients together until smooth. Serve immediately.

Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie
  • ⅔ cup milk
  • ½ cup greek yogurt, plain or vanilla
  • 1 banana, sliced and frozen
  • 1 tablespoon natural peanut butter
  • 2 cups fresh spinach
  1. Blend all ingredients together until smooth. Serve immediately.

Breakfast is so important and right now you can share one breakfast with a kid in need so easily!  Each share, tweet, pin, or watch equals one breakfast for a child!  Please share a breakfast today!

  1. Hi Trish! We’ve been on a green smoothie kick recently too, but I have’t tried the PB-Banana version. I’ll definitely give that one a shot…it looks great. Our boys sound very similar — mine like to push the buttons on the blender when we make smoothies (because it makes a loud noise!), and they’re more inclined to drink the smoothie if they helped make it! Thanks for the new recipe…oh, and I’ll have to try the Bel Vita “cookies”. They also sound like they’d be a hit in my house!

  2. I love, love LOVE PB in my green smoothies. I need to mask that taste and that totally does it. LOVE both of these recipes, I bet Jordan would even drink them!

  3. I’ll have to try these with my boys! This might be a dumb question but can you use the spinach in just a regular cheapo blender? I haven’t tried that before.

  4. I want one of these right now! And your little boy is absolutely adorable!! Pinned!

  5. Aukele at Instant Mommie says:

I’ve been hooked on those PB Banana green smoothies since Iowa Girl Eat’s post had gone viral on pinterest! Great job! I also love honey when I’m making those purplish smoothies.. It definitely balances it out and brings it all together! Another trick I use is substituting peanut butter for powdered peanut butter (all the protein with 1g of fat and minuscule calories lol). You should def try it!!

  6. yummm!!! I think Banana covers up everything! I always dump De-hydrated Kale into my smoothies and the boys never mind :o) I came over from Sugar Bee Crafts. Would love for you to share this at my Tuesday Link party as well!

  7. YUM! We make a lot of green smoothies around here but it’s usually a “handful of this, handful of that” method instead of a recipe. I will be giving both of these a try!!

    • I hear you there Caitlin :) I actually had to measure what I was doing when writing this up – it’s so easy to just add what you want! I’m so glad you’re giving them a try – they’re really yummy!

  8. I’m not a user of spinach, but sounds great. I’ve ate it going out, salads, etc, not sure how to use it in the kitchen. Do you use froz spinach? I honestly never bought fresh spinach. Can you help a first time user for spinach. Thanks!

  9. Just made the PB smoothie for my VERY picky daughter. I’m watching her suck it down right now with glee. You are my savior. Thank you.

  10. Oh yum, these smoothies look delicious!!

  11. Thanks for sharing these recipes! They will be good for adults (like me) who don’t eat enough veggies. Plus, I have started a new diet that encourages this very kind of smoothies. I saw your post over at “Savvy Southern Style” blog party.

  12. This does sound a little more kid-friendly (and mom friendly)! ;) We will have to try this soon!
    Mackenzie :)

  13. Yum! My toddler has recently started refusing vegetables, so I have been giving him green smoothies and I love to find new and yummy recipes, thanks so much for sharing!

  14. Peanut butter and banana is my favorite green smoothie flavor! Love that kids will drink it even when it’s green :-)

  15. I think I’m the only one on earth who hasn’t done the green smoothie thing yet…but you’re totally making me want to!! My boys are smoothie guys, too…loving that yours love the green variety as well. These look delicious, Trish. You’re inspiring me to branch out at breakfast! :)

  16. Elizabeth says:

These sound great- here is a dumb question- do the “stems” on the spinach leaves really blend up well? That is my only concern! THANKS!

    • Suzikat says:

I always remove the stems before I add my spinach, etc. to my blender. They are coarse, fibrous and do not improve the taste. It also gives me a chance to sift through the leaves for any that are wet or starting to go beyond their prime. Fresh is the key. I get my kale, spinach and spring mix pre-triple washed in bags at Trader Joe’s but I never buy more than I can use in a couple days, and I still rinse and spin it right before I blend.

  17. This. Is. GENIUS.

  18. Hi there. The current Food on Friday on Carole’s Chatter is collecting links to posts about breakfast dishes. I do hope you link this in. This is the link . Please do check out some of the other links – there are a lot of good ones already. Cheers

  19. These both look delicious! Love these smoothies!

  20. I have never tried smoothies for breakfast but these sound great and I want to try it out. About how many sevings does this make?

  21. I think that my children(adults) and my grandchildren would like the peanut butter smoothie. I just started drinking green smoothies and they aren’t bad at all and so healthy for you. A good way to get your fresh greens and fruit. Thank you for sharing. I want to try the banana and peanut butter one myself.

We may have met by chance…but we become friends by choice.

  22. This looks delicious. We’re big on green smoothies here in our house too. We often use kale instead of spinach but both are great.

  23. I am a new mom and I was looking for a green smoothie that tasted good…I just tried this one this morning and I love it! It tastes awesome and it gave me lots of energy. Thanks so much!

  24. Delicious green smoothies. They are the hot healthy item right now. Love your additions. Thanks for sharing on Thrusdays Treasures.

  25. I drink smoothies every morning for breakfast, so I’m always glad to stumble upon new recipes. Green doesn’t scare me LOL!

  26. I’ll have to try these green smoothies. I really need to serve healthier breakfasts to my kids! Thanks for the recipes!

  27. I love anything that’s got all that good green stuff in it!

  28. I was rather pleased to find this web-site.I wanted to thanks for your time for this excellent read!! I unquestionably enjoying each little bit of it and I’ve you bookmarked to have a look at new stuff you weblog post.

  29. is there a way to “keep” them? I would like to make them ahead like at supper time the night before. I live in a not-so-sound-proof- apartment and always feel bad when I use a blender in the morning.

  30. Confession…I added chocolate syrup to mine…and my 4 year old then finally drank it! I guess it’s better than nothing! At least he ate (or should I say…drank) some spinach! :). It was good without it too! I enjoyed the PB and banana combo. I always feel better after I drink a green smoothie…even without the chocolate! Thanks for the recipe…it is a keeper.

  31. Whoa! This blog looks just like my old one! It’s on a completely different
subject but it has pretty much the same page layout and design.

    Great choice of colors!
