Create a festive forest this holiday season with these easy DIY Paper Cone Trees!

Tis the season…for fun crafts! I swear I make more crafts in the holiday months than I do for the rest of the year. Reece and Bryce totally expect it and it’s definitely becoming tradition for us to break out the craft supplies and create together.

A few months back Scotch asked me if I could come up with some fun projects based on different color schemes and I said YES. How fun! The first one was black and white with silver and gold accents.

This girl just happens to love her metallics.

I thought of a lot of different ideas but settled on these paper cone trees because they are just so much darn fun. The creative possibilities are endless and with the help of Scotch Washi tapes, the designs are truly gorgeous.

The fun part is creating an entire forest out of these trees – perfect for the holidays!

You can use any pattern or color of washi tape that you want to create a look that is unique to you. The options are endless! Let’s get started…

Materials Needed:

  • White paper – this project used four sheets of computer paper
  • Double-sided tape applicator
  •  Sand paper
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Drill and drill bit
  • Wooden dowels
  • Small, square wooden bases
  • Paint – this project used black and white
  • Pom poms – metallic or any color you want
  •  Small craft adhesive dots
  • Scotch® Expressions Washi Tapes in various patterns – this project used Silver, Gold, Jewels, Black Stripe and Gray Leaf

materials-needed

Gather the materials you will need for the project.

To create the first cone tree, lay one piece of white paper horizontally and fold the right side back at an angle. Secure with double-sided tape.

Turn the paper over and decorate the front of the paper with Scotch® Expressions Washi Tape in the color and pattern of your choice. (This project used Jewels, placed horizontally across the page for the first cone.) Fold excess washi tape over the edge and adhere to the back of the paper. This will be the inside of the cone so don’t worry about how it looks 🙂

For this particular cone I added vertical rows of washi tape creating a boxed pattern, making sure to fold the excess tape over the edge again.

Flip the paper over and run double-sided tape along the folded edge from the second step. Roll the paper into a cone shape and press the folded edge with the double-sided tape on it over the other edge, adhering them together. You want to press firmly the entire length of the cone making sure the tape is really secured.

Use scissors to trim off the bottom of the cone so that it sits flat.

Repeat the previous steps to create cones with different designs. (NOTE: I used Scotch® Expressions Washi Tape in Gray Leaf horizontally on the second cone, Black Stripe horizontally on the third cone and Gold vertically on the fourth cone.)

Now it’s time to make some bases for these trees! First you’ll need some square blocks of wood. It’s important to make sure the depth of the wood is at least 1/2″ to ensure the dowel will be stable. To create the bases, sand wooden bases until smooth. Measure to the center and drill a small hole to insert the wooden dowel. Make sure the hole is large enough for the dowel to fit into, but snug enough that it stands completely upright.

Now it’s time to get creative. Decorate the bases with colored washi tape or paint as desired. Paint or tape the wooden dowels in coordinating colors and patterns and insert one dowel into each base.

Rest one cone on top of each dowel. Secure pom poms to the top of each cone tree with a small adhesive dot.

And you’re done! Now you can make an entire forest out of these paper cone trees 🙂

These are gorgeous inspirations Trish! I’ve just rolled out my pandora’s box for Christmas decors and this is definitely next to my DIY little white tree. It’d be great for our backyard living room!
