We are so excited for Valentine’s Day! The boys came home last week with their class lists and we have been busy getting their Valentine’s Day cards ready to go. I guess I’m lucky that there are only 20 kids in each class 🙂
Every year I struggle with the how to transport the Valentine’s Day cards to school. We usually end up using a ziploc bag but I wanted to kick it up a notch this year. This super fun DIY Valentine’s Mailbox not only safely transports the cards to school but is the perfect way to collect cards from friends and classmates as well.
I was looking at a tissue box and realized that the opening in the top would be the perfect size for Valentine’s Day cards. Little hands can easily reach in and pull out the cards whether they are collecting or receiving. The foam handle is super comfortable to hold onto and the design options are endless!
I am really excited with how these turned out and so are the boys!
Gather needed supplies, including an assortment of Scotch Expressions Washi Tape and your heart-shaped cookie cutter.
- Assorted Scotch Expressions Washi Tape
- 6″ Scotch Precision Scissors
- Scotch Fasteners
- Foam Sheet for handle – this project uses an 11-inch handle
- Empty Tissue Box
- Scotch Glue Stick
- Colored tissue paper, cut into 1-inch squares – this project uses about 5 full sheets of tissue paper
- Heart shaped cookie cutter
- Pencil with unused eraser
Cover a section of one side of the tissue box with Scotch Expressions Washi Tape. (Make sure the section is larger than your heart-shaped cookie cutter.) Using a pencil, trace the cookie cutter onto the section you taped. (This will be the heart outline you use later…) Use the Scotch Glue Stick to apply glue to a small section of the same side of the box, around the heart outline you just traced.
Wrap one square of tissue paper around the eraser-end of the pencil. Be sure to wrap it tightly so it won’t fall off. To adhere the tissue to the box, press the end of the pencil onto the box where you applied the glue in the previous step. Gently pull the pencil away, leaving the tissue glued to the box. Repeat until the glued area is covered with tissue paper.
Use the Scotch Glue Stick to apply glue along the heart outline you traced in the beginning. Repeat the previous steps to outline the heart shape using a different color square of tissue paper until the heart shape is completely covered.
Working in small sections, repeat the steps to cover the entire side of the box with tissue paper. Repeat steps to cover the remaining sides of the box with tissue paper.
Cut an 11-inch strip of foam for the handle. You can use craft scissors to create a decorative edge if desired. Apply Scotch Fasteners to two opposite sides of the box. Then, adhere two more Fasteners to each end of the foam handle. Attach the handle to the box by matching up the Scotch Fasteners. Press firmly to secure handle in place.
Once the handle has been attached, cover the top of the box in tissue paper. Now that the box is complete, send it to school with your children to collect Valentine’s Day cards!
Happy Valentine’s Day!
