5 Stain-Fighting Laundry Tips

I’ve often wondered if my boys make more than the average amount of messes.  I have to admit that I am a little bit of a klutz myself and am known for having stains on my shirts – frequently.  My husband likes to joke that if I would just get rid of the stained clothes in my closet – we’d have double the space!  I was visiting Maytag’s site the other day and took this fun little quiz to see how many stains our household will experience in the next ten years…here are the results:

I’m not exactly surprised :) I’ve been this way since I was a kid and I guess I’m passing on this trait to my boys.  My mom used to say that I enjoyed life so much that I didn’t like to worry about the details – you know, not making a mess :)  Having dealt with my own stains my whole life and now having to deal with the numerous stains that Reece and Bryce manage to get, I’ve come up with some excellent methods for combating these oh-so annoying stains.

First – Don’t ever let the stain sit.  When you first notice the stain is when you should take action.  Don’t ever throw a stained piece of clothes into the hamper.  You’re walking a very scary line there!

Second –  If you use a laundry stain remover – read the instructions!  Most say to spray, leave on for 5-10 minutes and then wash.  You are not supposed to let the stain remover DRY on the fabric.  I am sooo guilty of this!  I am always trying to do too many things at once and often will walk in, spray the garment, walk out, and forget about it.  Set a timer!  That’s the only sure-fire way you’ll remember if you’re at all like me :)

Third –  Carefully measure your detergent!  My husband drives me nuts when I see him just randomly pouring detergent – measure, measure, measure!  You are not getting your clothes cleaner with more detergent.  In fact, try using less than instructed – you’ll be surprised that your clothes come out just as clean with less!

Fourth – If the stain does not come out in the wash cycle – do NOT put it in the dryer!  This will set the stain and you will not be able to get it out.  Re-treat the stain and try again.

Fifth – Take care of your washer and dryer!  Did you know that you should clean both your washer and dryer?  Yup.  Using a product such as Affresh will help keep your washer in tip-top shape – giving your laundry the best clean it can!  Make sure to clean the lint filter after each load and the vent should really be cleaned every few months.  I can’t tell you how disgusting it was to see what our vent looked like when the Bravos were installed – shameful!  Not to mention dangerous!  Uncleaned vents can be a fire hazard so put that on your to-do list today!

I’ve added yet another weapon to my stain-fighting arsenal as of late – my Maytag Bravos XL Washer and Dryer.  My Maytag Bravos XL washer has this amazing PowerSpray technology that just powers away those tiresome stains! This industry-leading technology ensures even detergent distribution for enhanced cleaning performance. A mixture of water and detergent is sprayed directly onto clothes to instantly start cleaning soils and stains – how awesome is that!  Using a combination of extra cleaning action and a thorough rinse, this cycle powers out tough stains and delivers the best cleaning in the industry.

After my washer has done the dirty work {hehe!}, my Bravos XL Dryer steps up and treats our laundry with the respect it deserves.  No shrinking for us anymore!  That was a huge problem with our last dryer.  With  Bravos XL Dryer Advanced Moisture Sensing system, large, heavy loads are dried evenly and reduce the risk of shrinking.  With two little boys that seem to be growing daily, I can certainly do without shrinking clothes!  No need to buy more clothes than necessary :)
