Gardening in the Fall with Pumpkin Planters

Lately I’ve been so busy decorating for Fall inside of my house that the outdoors have been completely neglected!  There are so many ways to Find beauty in the Fall but one of my favorites is by planting flowers.  Mums are a favorite of mine.  They come in so many colors and are so hearty – just perfect for Fall gardening.

I wanted a fun way to display my mums and so of course I turned to Pinterest :)  I found these purple glitter milkjug planters and I thought it could turn it to a fun Jack-O-Lanter Planter.  Of course I didn’t have a whole bunch of milkjugs at my disposal so I rounded up a bunch of other plastic containers in fun shapes.

First I washed them with soap and water and then used rubbing alcohol to get rid of the adhesive from the labels.  Next Bryce helped me choose some fun Jack-O-Lantern faces from online.  I used painter’s tape to tape off the face.

Each container got several coats of “pumpkin orange” acrylic paint.

Then we peeled off the tape to reveal our Jack-O-Lanterns!

Next it was time to drill holes in the bottom of the planters.  I always do this to aid drainage when I’m making my own planters.

Next I filled the bottom of each planter with some small rocks {also for drainage}.

Now it’s time to plant!  I selected a mum for each planter and used Miracle-Gro Potting soil to make sure my mums are not going to just survive but THRIVE!  I also love that Miracle-Gro feeds my plants for six months – one less thing I have to worry about :)

In go the plants and the potting soil…

The boys are just thrilled with our new planters….

and I love that we’re finally getting around to decorating outside.
