If you’ve been reading my blog for any length of time you know that Family Fun is my favorite magazine for kids. It’s full of entertaining ideas, craft projects, yummy recipes, and games. Last June, Family Fun Magazine launched Badges of Fun – a yearlong program that celebrates family time. Each month, families have had the opportunity to earn themed badges by participating in fun activities together. This month is the LAST MONTH and the badge is Get Active!
To earn the badge your family needs to complete one of the suggested activities. There were three activities this month: Take a Hike, Hop on Your Bike, and Play in Your Yard.
I was sent an activity kit to get my family active and having fun. The first activity was to take a hike. We created this trail tote by painting the bottom compartments of an egg carton in various colors. I tasked the boys with filling each compartment with items found in nature in matching colors. Bryce took charge of the painting and we set off to find all sorts of colorful items…
They did pretty good. We actually found every color except for blue! They tried to convince me that the sky counted and failing that, they were both wearing blue shoes :)
The second activity was to take a bike ride. We take bike rides several times a week and this week was no exception. My boys love to ride and it’s a great way for us to get some exercise and have fun at the same time. We also get to the park a whole lot faster on bikes!
Playing in our yard was the third activity. The boys love to play in the front and the back every day – all day – if they can! Reece and Bryce set up a bean bag toss on the sidewalk using chalk lines as “levels”. Once they got all the bean bags in the bucket at one level they would take a step back and try again. I just set up a little bucket and they tossed away!

After you’ve earned your badge, you can print a custom display poster to show off your “Get Active” badge to remind your family to stay active and healthy! (You can also tear out this poster from the May issue of Family Fun.) What do you and your family do to stay active? Our boys are bike riders – they LOVE to ride bikes so we do that a lot. I think it’s so important to keep our children active and healthy and I love that we can ALL have fun doing just that!
